“Stroke” is an installation that is specifically created to be exhibited in the Schauraum during Ali Miharbi’s residency at quartier21. Large linear motors are equipped with different objects attached to their tips, such as a cleaning brush, a plunger and a window squeegee. The motors are fixed on stands that were placed behind the show glass, leaning against the glass and performing a reciprocating motion in contact with the glass. The piece is a continuation of a series of works Ali Miharbi has been creating lately, where machines do repetitive actions such as whipping and tickling the walls of the exhibition space. This time, the anthropomorphic approach to the architecture in previous works has been in eliminated in favor to focusing on the sounds that glass can make in connection to different objects. Also, replacing the walls in earlier pieces with the show glass, the work emphasizes the transparent layer between the viewer and piece rather than the boundaries of the space.
Ali Miharbi (b. 1976) lives and works in Istanbul. He acquired a dual degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering (BS, 2000) and Art Theory & Practice – Painting (BA, 2000) at Northwestern University, USA. In 2010 he completed his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. He recently showed in venues and festivals such as FILE Festival, São Paulo (BR); Dumbo Arts Center, Brooklyn, NY (US); Electriciteitsfabriek, The Hague (NL); TANAS, Berlin (DE) and Benaki Museum, Athens (GR). His work takes a variety of forms that range from photographic, graphic, sonic or sculptural pieces to dynamic systems driven by live or stored data.
