Isin Önol portrait

Isin Önol  has been working as an independent curator predominantly in Austria and Turkey since 2009. Before that, she leaded the Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art as its director and curator in Istanbul for three years. (2006-2009) She is an enthusiast producer of exhibition projects, talks, and other art-related events as well a researcher working in the field of contemporary art, cultural studies, and art education.

In 2014-15 Önol worked as a guest lecturer at the Department of Digital Art at University of Applied Arts; and as a guest curator at the Schauraum-Angewandte, Quartier21, MuseumsQuartier, Vienna.
She currently works as a visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of Social Difference at Columbia University, as a visiting curator at the Social Design – Art as Urban Innovation Masters Program at University of Applied Arts, Vienna, and as a guest critic at the MFA program at Montclair State University, NJ.

Since 2010, she has been taking part in the organizational and curatorial team of Sinopale, International Sinop Biennale in Turkey. In 2014 she took part at the curatorial residency program at RU New York. She is a member of AICA-TR and IKT among other cultural organizations and associations. She is the founder and program coordinator of Nesin Art Village, Sirince, Turkey.

Önol is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Cultural Studies, University of Applied Arts, Vienna, Austria. She has completed her Master of Advance Studies on Curating at ZHdK, Zürcher Hochschule der Kunst, Zürich, Switzerland (2009-2011). She participated to Ecole du Magasin, International Curatorial Training Programme, Centre National d’Art Contemporain, Grenoble, France and Gwangju Biennale International Curator Course, Gwangju, South Korea (2009). She received her MFA in Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design from Sabanci University (2003), and her BA in Art Education from Marmara University (2000), Istanbul, Turkey.

PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS:

Isin Onol organised and moderated the panel discussion entitled Educational Critique: How to Swot Curating (A Critical Review Of Curatorial Study Programmes) in the framework of the Symposium “Institution as Medium: Curating as Institutional Critique?” that took place at Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel in March 2010.

She presented her research entitled Investigating the Invisible: Hidden Connotations behind Shadows in December 2010 at the Pixxelpoint – 11th International New Media Art Festival, Nova Gorica, Slovenia.

She presented her paper entitled Challenges of Interaction between the Host and the Guest through Artistic Mobility (A Critique of Nation Based Exhibitions and Self-Orientalism) at the symposium “Exploring Mobility around the Mediterranean” in June 2011, Amman, Jordan.

She participated to the panel discussion at “Revolutions In The Digital Mediterranean: The Southern Mediterranean Forum” within the framework of ISEA 2011 Istanbul, the 17th International Symposium Of The Electronic Arts with her presentation entitled Mediterraneanising The Mediterranean: Altering Definitions In The Digital Media Era in September 2011.

She participated to the International Symposium of Skopje Electronic Arts Fair ’11 entitled “Energy, Biopolitics, Strategies of Resistance and Cultural Subversion” with her presentation entitled Dark Possibilities in Reconnecting with the Notion of Truth in November 2011.

She presented her text Cast Shadows as Readymade Images Amid the Status of Representation and Reality at the symposium: “Reality Manifestos, or Can Dialectics Break Bricks? A study of détournement as Art Forms”, Organised by Dimitrina Sevova, WUK Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna, Austria in January 2012. At the same symposium she held a panel discussion under the title Orders of Perception, with artist Bernd Oppl.

In May 2012 she was invited to present her recent performance project Renergy at “Subtle Technologies” Symposium/Festival at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada.

In October 2013, she presented her paper Shadows as Transitory Elements and Temporary Tools in Connecting with the Audience at ARTos Foundation, Nicosia, Cyprus.

In November 2013, she participated to the talk Mirage: A Residue of Corpreality at Gallery Postmasters, NY, USA.

In June-July 2014, she organized series of talks at Schauraum, Quartier21, in the framework of Summer of Sound concept of the MuseumsQuartier, Vienna, Austria.

In October 2014, she moderated the talk Video Conversations at MACP, School of Visual Arts, New York, USA

Her texts have been published in various exhibition catalogues and art magazines. (see published texts)

Primary research interests:

For a curatorial concern, she focuses on employing the notions of darkness, shadow, invisibility, and concealment, as practical strategies for creating participation, transmitting information, and embedded political connotations.

She is interested in strategies in occupation of spaces dealing with notions of censorship, discrimination, otherness as well as problematizing positions regarding national representations, within nation based exhibition conceptions.
